We
provide one-on-one tutoring for students of all ages. Our
tutors will come to your home and are available 7 days a
week. Tutors are screened, fingerprinted and background
checks are done.
ELEMENTARY
We have assessment tests that we can administer using a
nationally recognized curriculum from PLATO Learning (www.PLATO.com)
Afterwards we will use software that can be played on a
computer or Sony Playstation®. Children love the interaction
and it is especially helpful for ADHD and ELL students.
HIGH SCHOOL
There are many different options when it comes to working
with High School students.
~ Test taking or study skills
~ Help with homework
~ SAT prep
~ Credit Recovery (Fall of 2009)
OUT-OF-SCHOOL
Out-of-school youth present different needs. For these students
we can help them re-engage in school or look at other options.
~ GED
~Credit Recovery (Fall of 2009)
~Personality (June 2009)
~Vocational Skills Assessment (June 2009)
Our goal is to assist students in completing their education
– using whatever path works for them!

Not
every student and his or her family have a good relationship
with their school. Many barriers can exist which make it
difficult for both sides to communicate effectively. Apados
can be an advocate to promote better understanding and communication
between students and the school. We will work with the parent
(teach how to fish) and if need be we can stand in "proxy"
if a parent is unable to advocate for the child.
ADVOCACY DESCRIPTION:
We strive to help both parents/guardians and schools communicate
better. As advocates, we gather facts and information and
we are not afraid to ask questions. Advocates use facts
and independent documentation to resolve disagreements and
disputes with the school. We will also go into the courts
with you so that we can inform and empower your child's
attorney and the judge on issues before the court that pertain
to your child.
Because documents are often the keys to success, advocates
keep written records. They know that if a statement is not
written down, it was not said. They make requests in writing
and write polite follow-up letters to document events, discussions,
and meetings.
WHAT WE DON'T DO:
Apados does not give legal advice - we are not lawyers.
Think of us as more of a paralegal. We are on the ground
and interact with families and the schools through phone
calls and face-to-face visits. We can work with attorneys
to provide monitoring which will ensure that all the programs
and procedures are followed by all the parties involved.
We are not clinicians or therapists. We do have relationships
with agencies that provide those services and can make a
referral for you.

INTERVENTION
Advocacy and intervention can seem very similar. Whereas
advocacy stops at making sure the plan has been set, intervention
requires that we actively take a role in whatever educational
plan has been established for the student. Intervention
could take the form of weekly or daily visits at home to
help the family implement the plan, or we might actively
work with all the other providers to help them understand
and implement the student’s plan.
GUIDANCE
Guidance uses a process of inquiry and personal direction
that develops the student's level of awareness and responsibility,
and provides the student with structure, support and feedback.
We are often asked to play the role of career coach or guidance
counselor and help the student find direction when planning
life after high school or outlining a vocational track.

RE-ENTRY
/ TRANSITION |
Our
agency has come to understand the difficulties that can
arise when it is time for a youth to transition between
two structured environments. It could be any one of the
following:
~ Residential and school
~School district to school district
~Corrections/ detention back to home school
~Habitually truant or drop out returning to school
Often the most difficult and frustrating task is understanding
what paperwork needs to be filed and where. Keeping good
documentation and records is of the utmost importance. Parents/Guardians
can easily be overwhelmed or intimidated by this process,
which is NOT user-friendly.
Sometimes the agency/institution that is responsible for
the youth is not able to help with the transition back to
school. The agency's job is "done" once the student
leaves their facility and there is no bridge to help the
student re-connect.
